Beyond Viola de Lereno. Poetry of Domingos Caldas Barbosa. Project for a critical edition of the poetry included in Almanak das Musas [Muses Almanac] (1793-1794) by Domingos Caldas Barbosa
Until recently, knowing Caldas Barbosa – Lereno Selinuntino from the Academy of Fine Arts – implied collecting scattered references, due to the absence of a more comprehensive research on the poet, even today considered minor by literary criticism. To change this situation, we tried to gather and study the poems he published in Almanak das Musas [Muses Almanac], between 1793 and 1794.
The investigation resulted in the identification of his texts until now known as by anonymous, as well as the discovery of cultural and historical references behind each poem, whose understanding becomes more precise and rich for readers outside the socio-cultural universe in which it was generated.
Besides disseminating the scholarly poetic corpus of Caldas Barbosa, still virtually unknown, publishing these texts will allow the study of his poetic art, with unseen examples of the art of verse, such as Iberian redondilha, employed since the Middle Ages, and will enable the obtaining of relevant data about the Academy of Fine Arts, whose members have profoundly marked the poetic production of the late eighteenth century in Portugal.
This critical edition also aims to enable a more comprehensive conceptualization of Caldas Barbosa and his work beyond the Viola de Lereno, looking to enroll him as a poet of prominence in the history of literature.
