Irene Maria Leandro Rodrigues Fialho

Graduated in Modern Languages and Literatures, department of Portuguese and French Studies, Universidade Nova de Lisboa (1989).  In 1994, at the same university, has completed an MA in Contemporary Comparative Literature, with a dissertation about Folklore and Fake-lore Literature in textbooks of Portuguese Estado Novo. From then on, has devoted herself to the research of Portuguese 19th century literature and history, working mainly on Eça de Queiroz literary manuscripts and their textual criticism.

In the same scope, she edited the volume Alves & Cia. (Alves and Co.), for the project of Critical Edition of the Works of Eça de Queiroz (Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda); for this same project she prepared Almanaques e outros dispersos (Almanacs and other dispersed texts), presenting four of Eça’s unknown texts, as a result from her personal research.  

Following her line of investigation she rediscovered «A morte do Diabo», 'Death of the Devil', an operetta with libretto by Eça de Queiroz, that had been lost since 1869 and published it in Editorial Caminho (2013)
At the Portuguese National Library she published the transcription of Almanaques  (Almanacs, 2001) and a philological study about newly acquired manuscripts for the Eça de Queiroz archive (Aquisições Queirosianas, 2007).

She is now completing a PhD thesis in Portuguese Studies, to be presented to Universidade de Coimbra, on Censorship and Self-Censorship in Eça de Queiroz’s autographs, entitled «No manuscrito dum romance» (‘In the manuscript of a novel’). 

In preparation: critical edition of O conde de Abranhos (Count d’Abranhos) and A correspondência de Fradique Mendes (The letters of Fradique Mendes).

She is a researcher at Universidade de Coimbra's CLP, Support Professor at Universidade de Lisboa’s CLEPUL, and partner of Universidade de Lisboa’s IELT and CHC. Member of the Cultural Council of Eça de Queiroz Foundation since 2002, she joined its Board of Directors in 2010. She is president of Portuguese Museum Houses Association (APCM) and Director in Portugal for Iberian Writer’s Houses Association (ACAMFE).
